Chaat Parva is one of the popular celebrations especially in the terai region speically people of Mithila region of Nepal and India. This celebration is a Vedic ritual dedicated to the lord Surya i.e. the Sun god and Goddess Shashtihi i.e. Chhati Miyya. The Sun god is worshipped for sustaining life on earth and his continuous blessing to mankind. He is worshipped to promote well-being, prosperity, progress, cure illness, provide healing and stability and prosperity. 

Story behind Chhat Parva

God Ram and Goddess Sita were sent on an exile and once she returned home to Ayodhya. Upon their arrival their kingdom celebrated Deepwali and on its sixth day, Ramrajya was established. On this day, both of them fasted and the Sita performed a worship ritual to pray for the Sun God and the goddess Shashtihi. Thereafter, they were blessed with their sons Luv and Kush. 

When is Chaat Parva  celebrated?

Chaat Parva is observed for four days from Kartik Shukala Chaturthi to Kartik Shukla Saptami. It is usually a few days after the five days Yama Panchak celebration. This is usually around October or November as per the English Calendar.  

Why is Chaat Parva  celebrated?

This celebration is a vedic ritual dedicated to the lord Surya i.e. the Sun god and Goddess Shashtihi i.e. Chhati Miyya. Chaat Parva is celebrated for four days straight and each day has its own significance. In order to celebrate this festival, worshippers take holy baths, fast all day and worship the sun god during the sunrise and at the sun set.
